Exeter Respect Festival

The Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies will be presenting a diverse programme of activities focussing on the Middle East from 12:00 until 19:00 on Saturday 19 June at Exeter Respect Festival at Belmont Park in the City Centre. These include music performance, food tasting, storytelling for children and poetry readings. There will also be talks/Q&A on topics including Women in Asia, Africa and the Middle East and Muslims and Other Faiths in Britain. There will be the opportunity to learn about the Arabic language, with taster sessions at 15:00 and 17:00.

How has the Gulf been discursively constructed as an area of study? To what extent has theoretical metonymy discouraged conceptual innovation?

We are inviting advanced doctoral students and early career researchers (see definitions below) in the area of Islamic Legal Studies, to apply to participate in the USPPIP Summer School. USPPIP is a collaborative project of the universities of Exeter, Bergen, Göttingen and Leiden. The project (running from 2016 to 2018) aims to explore how the past is employed in Islamic legal thought and practice with a focus on the areas of violence, the state, gender and custom.
