Submit an Article
We invite work based on new research or with new perspectives. We have three formats for publication:
Journal articles: We accept submissions in the form of traditional journal articles, which should be 7,000-10,000 words in length (different sizes will be considered if sufficiently justified). The articles should be submitted directly to the NMES Editor.
Reviews: We accept reviews of recent books, articles, films, television programmes, art exhibitions or other media, with the only stipulation being that the item reviewed must pertain to the Middle East (broadly defined). We also encourage reviews that re-visit important older works in light of recent developments in scholarship, as well as reviews of works in languages other than English. The target size for single book reviews is 750-1500 words, though we would accept shorter ‘notice’ reviews or longer review articles as well. To have a review considered, please send a review proposal to the Reviews Editor. The editor will then provide further information. Please note that as a new e-journal, we are receiving few copies of books from publishers and thus will likely not be able to provide them to our reviewers. This may change in the future.
Quick Studies: We invite shorter (2,000 words maximum / no minimum) pensée-style pieces on any number of topics. Submissions could include, but are not limited to, a discussion of a particularly noteworthy aspect of work in progress, commentary on the direction of a current debate, highlighting of a cross-cutting methodological or theoretical issue, or discussion of a specific place or time neglected by scholarship. Quick Studies can be submitted directly, and the Quick Studies Editor is also always available for discussion of the proposed piece.
Submission standards:
Please use BRISMES formatting and citation standards.
For diacritics, please use IJMES standards.
Please submit your work in editable Microsoft Word format (for blind review and editorial purposes). Articles should be sent directly to the NMES Editor. Reviews should be sent directly to the Reviews Editor and ’Quick Studies’ should be sent directly to the Quick Studies Editor.
Submissions must be in English. We prefer submissions in UK English but we will also accept submissions in US English should this be your preferred dialect.
If a submitted article is deemed suitable for review, it will be subjected to a standard double-blind review process after which a decision will be made as to whether or not the article will be published in NMES.
