Dr Ceren Lord

Dr Ceren Lord is a Postdoctoral Research Officer in Middle East Studies at the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, Oxford University. 

 

Ceren completed her PhD in May 2015 at the London School of Economics, Government Department, focusing on state, religion and institutional change in Turkey. She holds a master’s degree from Oxford University (St Antony’s College) in Modern Middle Eastern Studies.  Alongside her academic career, Ceren previously worked for the private sector as an analyst specialising in the economics and politics of Turkey and the Middle East and North Africa region. She is a regular contributor to the Economist Intelligence Unit.  

Ceren’s main research interests include religio-political movements in Turkey, Middle East and South-East Asia; nation-state building and minorities; Turkish nationalism and the Alevis; state and religion relations; the changing nature of Islamic authority and the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) in Turkey; comparative democratisation, sectarianism, foreign policy and securitisation of minorities in Turkey and the Middle East.
