BRISMES' Statement on President Trump’s Executive Order limiting the entry of Middle Eastern refugees and immigrants to the U.S.

Together with other academic associations, including the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA), BRISMES strongly condemns the Executive Order limiting the entry of Middle Eastern refugees and immigrants to the U.S. and urges the President and Congress to lift the ban. The ban impedes the mission of the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES), which brings together teachers, researchers, students, diplomats, journalists and others who deal professionally with the Middle East, wherever in the world they may be based. The measures discriminate against individuals from the Middle East, many of whom are members of our community; they impede scholarly exchange; and they thus pose a direct threat to the effective pursuit of Middle Eastern studies, both in the UK and outside it. There is a real risk of impact on BRISMES members, especially those who are nationals of the countries specified in the Executive Order. We call on the President and Congress to withdraw it.
