The BRISMES Student Section aims to bring together students studying the Middle East in Britain in order to:

  • Strengthen the community of graduate students in the field of Middle East studies in Britain
  • Create a network providing advice and support for current and prospective graduates: raising awareness of academic resources, funding opportunities, and career opportunities both within and outside academia
  • Make BRISMES more representative and better equipped to promote Middle East studies 


BRISMES Bursaries


BRISMES is pleased to announce funding for ten £500 student bursaries to be awarded in 2019. Five will be awarded in February and a further five in the summer.  These may be for a specific research project, attendance at a specific conference or workshop or for travel to a specific event. Applications to host a specific workshop will also be considered. The event or research must have a Middle Eastern studies focus.

 Applicants:

  •  must be registered as a BRISMES Student Member;
  • must be registered on a postgraduate degree programme (or accepted onto a postgraduate degree programme for 2018/19)
  • may make no more than one application in any given academic year

 All applications will be assessed by the BRISMES Research Committee or sub-committee, whose decision will be final.

Recipients of the bursaries will be expected to acknowledge BRISMES in any resulting publications or outputs and may also be asked to submit a short report for the BRISMES Newsletter.  Receipts will also be requested.
