Scholarships

We are delighted to list below the scholarships and Awards offered by BRISMES. These are:

  3. BRISMES MA Scholarship

1. The AbdullahAl-Mubarak Al-Sabah Foundation / BRISMES Scholarships

The purpose of the scholarships is to encourage more people to pursue postgraduate studies in disciplines related to the Middle East in British universities. The scholarships will be for one academic year. The value of each scholarship will be £2,000. Two scholarships will be awarded.

Applications should be made to the BRISMES Administrative office.  The deadline for the latest round is 31 March 2012. To qualify applicants must fulfil the following conditions:

  • be registered at any UK university
  • be a paid-up member of BRISMES (Student membership suffices) but the time you apply
  • submit an application of 600 - 1000 words, by E-mail to the BRISMES research committee This should include a sketch of the overall research topic, and a description of the purpose for which the grant would be used
  • obtain a brief supporting statement from their supervisor

The BRISMES research committee will recommend to the Abdullah Al Mubarak Al Sabah Foundation which applications merit an award. The announcement of the award will be made in early May and published in the July edition of the BRISMES newsletter.

2010 RECIPIENTS:

Marwa Sharafeddin who is at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies in the Law Faculty at Oxford University.  Her thesis title is: ‘Personal Status Law reform in Egypt: women’s rights NGOs navigating between Islamic law and international human rights law’.

 

Matthias Determann who is a PhD student in History at SOAS. The title of his research project is ‘Contemporary Historiography in Saudi Arabia’.

Barclays / BRISMES Scholarships


We are delighted that Barclays Capital has generously offered to sponsor BRISMES. Part of the sponsorship will be used to create three new scholarships, each of £1,000.

Applicants must:

*be a registered research student (of any nationality) in a UK institution;
*have completed at least your first year of doctoral research;
*be a paid-up member of BRISMES (student membership suffices) by the time you apply;

*obtain a brief supporting statement from your supervisor.

For the most recent round, the deadline will be 31st March 2012. The successful applicant(s) will be informed as soon as possible. The name(s) will be publicised in the next BRISMES Newsletter. Decisions by the Research Committee of Council are final. In the event of no suitable proposals being received, no awards will be made.

Supporting evidence for expenditure incurred must be supplied.

The award winner(s) will be expected to give a paper at the BRISMES conference in the year following the award.

3. MA Scholarship

BRISMES offers an annual Master's scholarship for taught Master's study at a UK institution. The Master's programme can be in any discipline but should include a majority component specifically relating to the Middle East. Preference will be given to candidates resident in the European Union, and to institutions who are members of BRISMES (academic institutional membership can be obtained for £500).
Applications should be forwarded by the Director of the Master's programme concerned, to the BRISMES Administrative Office, and should include:

  • a supporting statement from the course Director not exceeding 500 words
  • the programme syllabus;
  • a statement by the candidate not exceeding 500 words;
  • the candidate's CV and transcript of previous academic results;
  • two academic references.

For Master's programmes commencing October 2012, the award will amount to £1,200 -- that is 50 % of the course fees for most Master's programmes. The names of the winner and the institution will be publicised in the BRISMES Newsletter and website.

Applications for October 2011 must reach the BRISMES Office by 31st March 2012. The decision by BRISMES Council will be announced as soon as possible thereafter.

NON-BRISMES SCHOLARSHIPS

The British-Yemeni Society

BRITISH-YEMENI SOCIETY 2012 ACADEMIC GRANT

The British-Yemeni Society is a bilateral friendship society which seeks to promote good relations and to further understanding between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Yemen. As part of this mission, the B-YS intends to offer one £500 grant annually to assist with academic study related to the Yemen.

SCOPE & APPLICABILITY

Applications are invited from anyone carrying out research in or on Yemen at a British or Yemeni University. Applicants' nationality is irrelevant.

Applications may be made to assist with study in any subject or field, so long as it is concerned with the Yemen, and is for a specific qualification (e.g. BA, MA, PhD etc.) Post-doctoral researchers may apply, but will only be considered should no more junior applicant approach the Committee.

Applications must follow normal academic procedures, i.e. an abstract supported by a recommendation from the applicant's supervisor.

The decision of the Committee is final.

TIMEFRAME

Applications are to reach the Secretary to the Committee by 31st March 2012. The Committee will consider the applications and make the grant at the AGM in June.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

As a condition of the grant, the successful applicant will be required to make an acknowledgement of the grant in the thesis or dissertation. The applicant will also be expected to make a presentation to the Society (to be summarised in the Society's Journal) on the results of the research assisted by the grant.
