British Institute at Ankara
Fellow for Project in Cultural Heritage Management in Southern Turkey
The British Institute at Ankara (hereafter BIAA) seeks to appoint a Fellow to manage a project on Cultural Heritage Management. The Fellowship is tenable for two years in the first instance; further prolongation may be possible according to funding constraints. The Fellow will be required to be resident in Ankara and spend significant periods of time travelling within Turkey as well as to the UK. The project will be based on collaboration between the British Institute at Ankara and Hacettepe University, home institution of Dr Veli Köse, project director at Aspendos. Support and collaboration with other HEI’s in Turkey and the UK is expected and anticipated.
Research will concentrate on South-west Anatolia, an area of particular interest to scholars and researchers from the BIAA. The aim is to create a framework for cultural heritage management on a regional level in ancient Pamphylia and Pisidia, the modern provinces of Antalya, Burdur and Isparta. The project comprises two elements: Aspendos in Pamphylia will serve as a pilot project for classical sites, which receive large numbers of visitors, but have only rudimentary arrangements for protecting the remains and for enabling visitors to make the most of their trip. This will lead into the more challenging task of providing a cultural management framework for the numerous remains in the mountains of Pisidia, left completely unprotected, largely unknown and little visited.
Applicants are expected to hold a PhD or to have equivalent working experience and to have substantial practical and theoretical experience of Cultural Heritage Management issues. As the fellow will have to negotiate with museums and local and regional and national authorities, command of the Turkish language (as well as English) is a requirement.
