Nominees for 2022 Elections

Joe Macaron

Joe Macaron

I am a researcher on international relations in the Middle East affiliated with the University of Bath with expertise in the Levant and Iraq. The issue of academic freedom is dear to my heart because I have seen academics I have known and admired get censored by their own university or government, sometimes to the extent of going to prison or getting assassinated for speaking their mind. Over the course of my career as an analyst, former journalist, and United Nations staff, I have acquired the necessary skills of advocacy and public communications and built a wide regional and international network of contacts with policymakers, academics, universities, and professional associations. I have also worked as a consultant for a human rights organization in New York by drafting handbooks and guidelines to help activists in the Middle East and North Africa deal with the challenges of repression and censorship.
