Call for Papers: Arabic Pasts: Histories and Historiographies

AKU Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations
This annual exploratory and informal workshop offers the opportunity to reflect on history writing in Arabic. We encourage contributions focused on methodologies, research agendas, and case studies that investigate history writing in the Middle East and North Africa in any period from the seventh century to the present. We are interested in papers that consider the practical and conceptual challenges of working on history writing in the region. Contributions are invited from scholars at all career levels, addressing any period and any part of the Middle East and North Africa.
Call for Papers: ASTENE Summer Online Conference

Association for the Study of Travel in Egypt and the Near East (ASTENE)
Following the postponement of the 14th biennial ASTENE Conference to July 2022 and in light of the ongoing pandemic, we invite proposals for contributions to a smaller virtual conference which will take place 24-25 July 2021. Proposals may be submitted either for individual presentations of 20 minutes or for panels of 3-4 speakers of 20 minutes each. Please include a biography of no more than 200 words, presentation title and a 300-word abstract. Proposals should be submitted to conference.astene@gmail.com by 30 April 2021.

Critical approaches to foreign policy

BISA Foreign Policy Working Group & BRISMES subcommittee on Outreach and Pedagogy
The event looks at foreign policy through different lenses. On the ontological level, it revisits foreign policy analysis through a critical discussion of how non-state actors as agents can be related to foreign policy matters. On the epistemological level, foreign policy is perceived through different approaches: A feminist perspective that links feminist critiques with current foreign policy practices. The focus lies in a critical stance on the transformative potential of feminist foreign policy.

Gender in Muslim Contexts, Online Summer Programme

Run by leading experts on gender and Islam, the programme will bring together scholars and students from diverse backgrounds to discuss key issues in the study of gender in Muslim contexts. Call for Papers: Gramsci in the Middle East and North Africa

Abstracts are invited for an upcoming conference on Gramsci in the Middle East and North Africa. In thinking about our contemporary moment in historical context, Antonio Gramsci has emerged as a popular theorist in work focused on resistance, revolution, popular movements, capitalism, political economy, memory, temporality, transnationalism and internationalism. This conference aims to bring together scholars working with Gramsci on any of these themes, with the ultimate aim of publishing a Special Issue on Gramsci in the Middle East and North Africa.
