The Practice of Persuasion: an introduction to Arabic medical tables
03/11/2020 5:30pm
Wellcome Collection
Emerging in the Arabic-writing sphere during the eleventh century, these texts were inspired by astronomical charts and astrological horoscopes. The authors claimed that the tables streamlined extensive medical encyclopaedias into single volumes, for the benefits of medical knowledge, not its theoretical proofs and definitions. Dr. MacMurdie will use examples from the Wellcome Collection, and explore the significance of table layout and aesthetics as visual rhetorics, a space where the invisible cosmos and visible world converged.
Black Monuments Matter
05/10/2020 9:00am - 31/03/2021 5:00pm
The Aga Khan University's Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations and the Zamani Project at the University of Cape Town
The Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations and the Zamani Project at the University of Cape Town are pleased to present the online exhibition "Black Monuments Matter". Black Monuments Matter recognises and highlights African contributions to world history by exhibiting World Heritage Monuments and architectural treasures from Sub-Saharan Africa. In doing so, this exhibition sweeps away ideas based on racist theories and hopes to contribute to both awareness of African identity and pride of African Heritage.
