Nominees for the BRISMES Committee on Academic Freedom (2025-2028)

Mohammad Malik

Mohammad Malik is a scholar-activist based at the University of York. Mohammad has worked extensively on academic freedom through his role as president of the Palestinian Solidarity Student Society at the University of York between 2023-2024. During his tenure he hosted conversations, roundtables and panels with advocacy organisations like CAGE International and Prevent Watch, providing students with the skills to contest institutionalised hostility towards pro-Palestine activism. He is also the co-founder of the student-staff network, a group organising to defend Palestinian, Arab and Muslim students and staff at risk of securitisation at the University of York. His doctoral research focuses on sexuality and queer studies in the Gulf region, understanding how state-violence and homophobia create spaces of exclusion. He has experience working with institutions in the Gulf and understands the complexities and challenges that restrict freedom of speech and encourage self-censorship.
