Academic Freedom | BRISMES Committee on Academic Freedom Statement on the UK Denying Entry to Dr Andreas Malm
The BRISMES Committee on Academic Freedom strongly condemns the UK Home Office’s decision to deny entry to the Swedish academic Dr Andreas Malm on the grounds that his “presence in the UK is not considered to be conducive to the public good”.
This decision represents a deeply troubling trend of attacks on academic freedom and the free exchange of ideas, which is a cornerstone of democratic society.
Excluding scholars on the basis of their political views or intellectual positions sets a dangerous precedent, undermining the principles of open inquiry, critical debate and freedom of expression that democratic societies have a responsibility to uphold.
We call on the Home Office to reverse its decision.
