Notice of BRISMES Annual General Meeting 2024
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the 2024 Annual General Meeting of the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies will be held as follows:
Venue: Margaret Fell Lecture Theatre, Lancaster University, Lancaster LA1 4YW
Date: Tuesday, 2 July 2024
Time: 13:30-15:00 (BST)
All members of BRISMES are invited to attend the meeting. Members have the right to appoint a proxy under section 324 of the Companies Act 2006 and article 20 of the Articles of Association of the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies.
Any member(s) having business for the annual general meeting shall notify the Secretary, José Ciro Martínez, in writing by emailing office@brismes.org at least 14 days before the meeting, except that where such business would involve the passing of a special resolution by the members of the charity, the member(s) shall notify the Secretary in writing at least 28 days before the meeting.
A final agenda and associated papers will be circulated on 24 June 2024.
The meeting will be held to transact the following business:

1. Minutes of the 2023 AGM
To be approved.
2. Matters arising from the minutes not covered elsewhere on the agenda
3. Elections to Council
a. To report that the terms of the following Council members have ended since the previous AGM:
- Lucy Garbett
- Marral Shamshiri-Fard
b. To report the end of Neve Gordon’s term as Vice President.
c. To ratify the election of Nicola Pratt as President.
d. To ratify the election of Sharri Plonski and Lewis Turner as Co-Vice Presidents.
e. To report the resignation of the following Council members since the previous AGM:
- Nazanin Shahrokni
- Hana Sleiman
- Miriyam Aouragh
f. To ratify the co-option of
- Yara Zebian and Motasem Abuzaid (Graduate Section Co-Presidents)
4. Treasurer’s Report, Annual Accounts and Financial Outlook
To receive and consider the accounts for the year ended 2023 and the reports of the Treasurer and independent examiner.
